Volleyball To Take On Penn State In NCAA Tournament On Friday
For a second consecutive year, the Long Island University volleyball team will head to State College, Pa. for the NCAA Tournament. The Blackbirds will take on host Penn State on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the 2006 Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. The Nittany Lions drew the No. 3 seed in the tournament, with only the top 16 teams earning seeds.
Long Island (25-10) earned its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance by capturing the Northeast Conference Championship with a 3-0 (30-12, 30-22, 30-22) win over Robert Morris on Nov. 19. The Blackbirds went a perfect 8-0 in conference play and four of their 10 losses came against teams that also made this year’s tournament. Cornell and Hofstra round out the four-team bracket that will compete at Penn State. Long Island defeated Cornell, 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-24), on Sept 23.
Penn State (29-2) earned its birth to the tournament by winning the Big Ten title with a 3-0 (30-21, 30-27, 30-22) sweep of Northwestern on Nov. 25. It was the fourth consecutive conference championship for the Nittany Lions.
The Blackbirds visited Penn State for the NCAA Tournament last season, defeating Cornell in the first round before falling to the host Nittany Lions in the second round.
