The first film festival in New York City dedicated entirely to themes concerning disability, the BIDFF was organized by the Brooklyn Campus, Brooklyn Center for the Independence of the Disabled and ConnecTV during the summer of 2005 to advance the understanding of the challenges that disabled people face. The Brooklyn Campus continues that effort with an annual award and screening for an outstanding film concerning the theme of disability and independence.
