The University participates in the following activities:

    • Brooklyn Young Filmmakers Film Salon Series
      Hosted by the University every semester, this unique intergenerational salon has drawn filmmakers from all parts of the world, as well as youth media organizations from other parts of the city, to share their knowledge and work with their Brooklyn counterparts and the University community.
    • Fort Greene Connection
      The Fort Greene Connection is a cooperative network of organizations serving the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill neighborhoods. The purpose of the Fort Greene Connection is to provide a forum for member organizations to exchange ideas and promote opportunities to collaborate and partner on initiatives.

  • Prospect Park Alliance
    Mission Statement
    The Prospect Park Alliance is a public/private partnership with the City of New York, which, through fundraising and advocacy, furthers the restoration and preservation of Prospect Park and the development of the Park as a resource for the people of New York City.

The Alliance has not only been active in the restoration of Prospect Park's physical well-being, but also its transformation into an important cultural institution.

  • Active participation in the Community Committee
  • Community Board #2
    The Community Board is the official municipal body whose primary mission is to advise elected officials and government agencies on matters affecting the social welfare of the district. Community Board #2 meets on the second Wednesday of each month, except during July and August. All meetings are open to the public. In an attempt to maximize accessibility, the general meetings are held at different locations within the district.
    • Ms. Fuentes is a Community Board member representing the University
    • Ms. Fuentes is Secretary of the Youth, Education and Cultural Affairs-a Sub-Committee. Meetings are hosted by the Brooklyn Campus.

  • New York Commission on Human Rights
    Facilitated a partnership with the New York Commission on Human Rights. The Commission has agreed to provide seminars on sexual discrimination, disability, community issues ranging from landlord tenant to educational issues free of charge to students of the Brooklyn campus.

  • American Cancer Society
    In the past, the University has hosted the “Relay for Life” and participated in Kick-off Ceremony for American Cancer Society campaign, and participates in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer annual walk.
  • MetroTech BID :MetroTech BID – mission statement
    The mission of the MetroTech Business Improvement District is to provide top quality, efficient and cost-effective service and support to its customers.

    This is accomplished through program initiatives in the areas of neighborhood safety, sanitation, business development and services, real estate management assistance programs, liaison with City agencies and elected officials, processing of constituent complaints and development of new internal and external resources to support programs goals.

    We also recognize the need to work closely with neighboring communities to support their efforts at local improvements.

    • Active participation in the MetroTech BID health Fair at MetroTech Commons every year.

  • Common Ground
    The Common Ground Service Learning Program at Long Island University's Brooklyn Campus combines community service with academic instruction. It focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. The program involves students in organized community service that addresses local needs, while developing students' academic skills and commitment to the community.

  • Legislative Committee For Student Services
    The Legislative Committee for Student Services was formulated to address the pressing governmental issues that affect students of the Brooklyn campus. By hosting voting forums and encouraging interaction with elected officials, students learn about the importance of voting and become aware of the issues affecting university spending, student assistance, and the greater New York community. A series of training workshops are held, “teaching students how to effectively interface with elected officials.” These workshops often feature presentations by local elected officials, the Council on Independent Colleges and Universities, government relations officials and university administration.

    The goal is to educate students about the legislative process and to encourage communication with the public servants of their respective voting districts. Each year the university hosts an Albany trip. Thus, enabling students to visit the capitol, meet with elected officials, and interact with students from various institutions of higher learning. The committee is comprised of representatives from the student body and university administrators from various departments.
