Born and raised in the East New York section of Brooklyn, Michael Bivona dropped out of school at
the age of 16 and joined the United States Air Force in 1952. He obtained his G.E.D. and served as a
communications specialist in Japan before completing his service in 1956.
Once home, Mr. Bivona excelled personally and professionally, immersing himself in accounting studies
at Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus. He became president of the Accounting Society and the
Veteran’s Club and worked in the accounting department. He was granted a CPA license following his
graduation with a bachelor of science in 1960.
After a number of years in private practice, he expanded his accounting firm, partnering with C.W. Post
alumnus, Louis M. Ambrico ’73. He next invested in Manchester Technologies, Inc., becoming part owner,
C.F.O. and C.O.O. His combined expertise in the areas of technology and finance helped to fuel the computer
supplier’s rapid growth by the time the company went public in 1996.
Today, Mr. Bivona and his wife, Barbara, devote their time and financial resources to a broad array of
philanthropic causes. They are generous supporters of Long Island University. Mrs. Bivona is a member of the
Tilles Center board of overseers. Mr. Bivona funded the C.W. Post Bivona Graduate Student Center and is
an executive member of the College of Management board of advisors. Mr. Bivona also recently donated the
300-volume “Michael Bivona Collection: Columbus, the Age of Discovery and Related Books,” to the
Columbus Citizens Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving Italian-American heritage.
A man of diverse interests and talents, Mr. Bivona is the author of “Business Infrastructure: in a Computer
Environment,” which was published by Vantage Press in 2001. He is an avid boater and a ballroom dancing
aficionado who loves to perform with his wife.
The Bivonas live in Dix Hills, Long Island and have two children and two grandchildren.

Dr. Richard Izquierdo has devoted his professional life to enhancing health care opportunities in the
medically underserved South Bronx. Born in East Harlem, he spent his formative years there, in the Bronx
and in Puerto Rico. He attended Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus, graduating in 1951 with a
bachelor of science in biology, and he earned an M.D. in 1957, from the University of Lausanne Medical
School in Switzerland. After completing his internship and residency in pediatrics at Fordham Hospital in
1962, he opened his first practice on Southern Boulevard in the Bronx, two blocks from his home.
His practice thrived, as did his commitment to community activism. For 14 years, Dr. Izquierdo served as
the chairman of the 41st Precinct Community Council, infamously known as Fort Apache. He fought an
unsuccessful battle to save St. Francis Hospital from closure, but then persuaded New York City to purchase
the property and build the Ruiz Belvis Neighborhood Family Health Center, where thousands of South Bronx
residents receive medical care today.
Dr. Izquierdo is the founder and medical director emeritus of the Urban Health Plan (UHP), a federally
qualified community health center that succeeded the San Juan Health Center which he had founded earlier.
UHP serves more than 27,000 patients and has received national recognition as a provider of quality care. It
has been certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the
nation’s foremost oversight body for health care organizations and managed care.
For the past 15 years, Dr. Izquierdo has practiced medicine at the Multi Medic Physician Services, another
Bronx health resource that he created, which is at the forefront of managed care service providers. Because of
his concern for ethnic and racial health care disparities, Dr. Izquierdo is founding The Bronx Charter School
of Science and Health Careers to train and educate children of minority backgrounds to enter careers in
health services.
Still a resident of his beloved Bronx, Dr. Izquierdo resides just a few blocks away from the home in which
he lived while attending Long Island University.
