"My role as the asthma community health worker is to help people with asthma identify and avoid asthma triggers and understand asthma self-management. These free asthma services occur through educational workshops as well as one-on-one counseling sessions in community based facilities, libraries, schools, homes, or at Long Island University."

"My research area is determining the cost effectiveness of programs that try to help people rely less on emergency department visits for their medical care. One of the goals of the Brenda Pillors program is to help people better manage their asthma so they have few asthma related health emergencies. I'll be tracking the long-term results of the program to see if people are indeed benefiting from the educational efforts and visiting the emergency department less often."

"My research interests pertain to developing educational programs that address patient and provider perspectives about managing chronic health conditions. I will be focusing on identifying asthmatic patients' beliefs, knowledge and attitudes towards asthma and asthma management, specifically focusing on complementary therapies used by people with asthma. We will be using the information obtained through a literature review and interviews with people who have asthma to develop an educational module for health professions’ students. This information will also be shared on our website as a resource for members of the public and health care providers."

"My primary areas of research are in adult development and adult education. In this project I will be focusing on developing and assessing an educational module(s) applicable to health science programs in pharmacy, physical therapy, respiratory care and nursing at Long Island University. This educational module will include aspects of how cultural beliefs and practices affect health seeking and treatment behaviors of people with asthma. This module will also explore and describe complimentary treatments used in various patient populations in NYC."

"My research interests are in both education and caring for people with asthma. In this project, we are partnering with the New York City’s Asthma Training Institute to develop a review course that prepares community health workers to take the asthma educator certification from the National Asthma Education Certification Board (NAECB). This program is expected to be offered during the fall 2009 so that participants can take the NAECB exam version based upon the EPR-3 guidelines. Scholarships for this program are available."
