Most Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to apply to Long Island University?
The best way to apply to the school (and waive the $30 application fee) would be to go here (link directly to apply now page).  A high school senior should send his or her high school transcripts, SAT and/or ACT scores, a transfer student should send all official transcripts for any previously attended colleges, by mail to Long Island University – Brooklyn Campus, or submit them in person.  If you are having trouble submitting this electronically, you can fax your application to the Office of Admissions at (718) 797-2399, along with the supporting documents necessary.

Do any of your programs have application deadlines?
Yes for undergraduates the Doctorate of Pharmacy degree (PharmD.) program has a deadline for the Fall 2007 semester of February 1st, the Physician’s Assistant program’s deadline for Fall 2007 is January 31st, and the Occupational Therapy program’s deadline for Fall 2007 is January 16th. 
For Graduate programs the SLP programs deadline for Fall 2007 is March 1st, the PSD program’s deadline is February 1st, the SWK programs deadline for Fall 2007 is March 15th, and the DPT’s programs deadline for Summer2007 is December 1st for early decision and March 1st for normal decision.


What is required to apply to LIU?                                                                                                  
You must submit a completed application form along with your official high school transcripts and SAT scores.  Transfers students must submit official transcripts from every college attended. Transfer students with less than 24 transferable must also submit official high school transcripts.. Graduate students must submit all required documents as requested by their respective department of interest.


What are Long Island University’s deadlines?
Long Island University has rolling admissions for most programs. However, certain programs, such as (list programs here) have their own set deadline. The list of deadlines for the current year may be found here (link to page with deadlines).

What is the minimum high school average I need to get in?
 Most programs require a H.S. average of at least 75, with a few requiring and 80 or above.  The Pharmacy program requires an average of at least an 85

What is the minimum SAT score?
SAT scores are not required for most majors.  However, there is a minimum requirement of 1000 combined score for Health Professions.  

Does Long Island University accept transfer credits? AP? CLEP? College NOW?
The Brooklyn campus accepts transfer credits with the grade C and above from all SUNY and CUNY institutions and colleges and universities with accreditation from the following regional accrediting associations:

  • Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
  • North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc./Commission on Institutes of Higher Education
  • Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/ Commission on Colleges
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges

The university also accepts AP Exam grades 3, 4, and 5 for credit, CLEP exam grades 50 and above for credit (check www.collegeboard.com for credit granting scores for specific exams), and College NOW courses grades C or better.

What can you tell me about the dormitories/residence life?                                                      
 The Richard L. Conolly Hall provides housing for approximately 600 students.  Room styles vary; there are standard, suites and apartments.  For housing costs please contact the Office of Residence Life at 718-488-1046. Where is Long Island University? How do I get there?                                                                 
Long Island University is located in Downtown Brooklyn, on Dekalb Ave and Flatbush Ave.  One can get to the University by car, subway and bus. Directions can be found here.


Are scholarships available?
LIU does offer scholarships based on academic excellence. Please be advised if a student partially meets the standards, it is not automatic that they will receive a particular scholarship. Financial Aid is also available. More information can be found here.

What is the current tuition at LIU?
For the Fall 2006 semester, tuition is current $729 per credit. The tuition for the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Services is a flat rate of $11,685 for years 1 and 2; $13,726 for years 3-6.

Is the application process different for International Students?
Along with the completed undergrad application, the International Student application must include a $30 application fee, the completed I-20 request form, an affidavit of financial support, 2 letters of recommendation, and a course by course credit evaluation and translation by one of the agencies listed in the supplemental application.

How important are letters of recommendation?
Although letters of recommendation are not required, students are encouraged to include recommendation letters to support their application
