NYABJ/LIU High School
Journalism Seminar, sponsored by the Journalism Department in
collaboration with the New York Association of Black Journalists,
serves New York City high school students and journalists. This
program is currently in its second year.
Students are exposed
to the field of journalism within a university setting and a state-of-the-art
news writing lab. They are trained in news writing and in desktop
publishing skills by professional journalists. For a final project,
students produce a publication based on their experience in the
seminar. Past seminar speakers have included Les Payne of Newsday,
Lisa Brownlee of the Wall Street Journal, and Sherie
Holder of Sports Illustrated for Children. Community leaders
also address the group.
This intensive seminar
meets all day Saturday for a period of seven weeks. Thirty students
are chosen to participate from various high schools including Boys
and Girls High School, Paul Robeson High School, John Dewey High
School, Amityville High School, John Adams High School, and Sacred
Heart High School.
