Educational Outreach:The New York City Vocational Training Center

The New York City Vocational Training Center is an alternative high school program sponsored by the Board of Education, and is currently in its 12th year of collaboration with the Brooklyn Campus.

This program addresses the needs of 17-21 year old students, specifically their transition from school to work. While these students have experienced difficulty achieving in a traditional high school environment, they have demonstrated a desire to work while continuing their education through independent study and/or GED preparation.

At the Brooklyn Campus, these students have been afforded an opportunity to develop job skills by working side by side with office personnel in departments on campus. In some cases, the students go on to register as Long Island University students through the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). Other students seek additional job training or enter the job market. Student participants are self-selected or referred by school personnel. Fifteen to 20 students participate in this program each year.
