Urban Research,
conducted by the Sociology Department, is currently in its fifth
year. Students acquire field research skills and develop their analytical
abilities as they apply their classroom learning to real-life situations.
Past projects have included research in several New York City neighborhoods,
particularly Red Hook, Fort Greene, and Bedford Stuyvesant. Topics
include job-seeking and hiring practices in a low income neighborhood,
a "pocket of plenty" within an urban ghetto, and the sources
of racial, ethnic and income diversity. This research has been published
in the City Journal, The Wall Street Journal, and
The Journal of Social Problems. Students have presented research
at regional and national conferences from Boston to Los Angeles.
Additionally, students have provided research for the Regional Planning
Association and for the Fort Greene Strategic Neighborhood Action
Program (SNAP).
