College
Entry Plan
The College Entry Plan
(CEP) was established in 1981 for individuals who would ordinarily
be unable to attend college because they lack a High School diploma.
In this plan, students can earn their High School Equivalency Diplomas
through college credits. It is an unusual opportunity to continue
educational, personal and career development.
Applicants to the College
Entry Plan must be at least 21 years old by the time of their first
semester in the plan. They are required to demonstrate maturity,
self-motivation and the ability to think and express ideas clearly,
through the completion of the CEP application form. For those applicants
whose English skills appear strong enough to pursue a college career,
a date will be arranged to take Long Island University's placement
exam; this exam involves reading comprehension and English composition
(a written essay).
Prospective students
who meet all the requirements for admission will be notified as
soon as possible. However, any student wishing to apply for financial
aid must also meet the following requirements: be either a U.S.
citizen or permanent resident; not be in default of a student loan;
and pass the federally-mandated exam required of all those without
a High School diploma or GED. This exam will be administered at
Long Island University and scheduled by the Plan's Director in consultation
with the student.
Once accepted into the
College Entry Plan, students enroll in regular undergraduate courses
at Long Island University, according to their desired majors. They
may choose to attend either on weekdays or evenings and weekends
(at their convenience). CEP students are expected to maintain a
minimum grade point average of "C" or their continued
participation is reevaluated.
Upon successfully completing
the specifically-required 24 undergraduate credits (which are spread
across various disciplines, as required by the N.Y. State Education
Department), the student is awarded the High School Equivalency
Diploma and may continue at Long Island University as a candidate
for an associate's or bachelor's degree; the completed credits required
by the student's major count towards that degree.
