Raku Ceramics: Primitive Sophistication (ARTX 150)
Raku is a low-temperature Japanese technique involving a very rapid glaze cycle; the work is placed into, and removed from, a red-hot kiln --- then quickly cooled. This provides a remarkable richness of color and surface obtained from plain or painted glazes contrasted against a gray or black clay body.
Students learn this conscious return to the direct treatment of clay by formulating clay bodies, glaze formulas and firing a kiln. The historical context of Raku in early Japanese society and its role in modern society is explored through slides and lectures. (18 hours)
Please note: all course materials are included in the tuition.
