The central purpose
of the Writing Center is to provide one-on-one and small
group tutoring. Our trained staff works with students
regardless of where they are in the writing process, be
that understanding an assignment, learning strategies
for reading more effectively, developing stronger arguments,
or mastering techniques for editing grammar.
Tutoring sessions
typically last up to one hour per week per semester and
are driven by what students perceive as their needs. In
other words, our tutors resist programming sessions around
their own imposed assessment of the student's writing
issues and instead work to have the student direct the
sessions around a mutually agreed upon agenda.
This approach
to tutoring fits with our mission to empower student writers
and to help students become aware of how assuming agency
in their writing can positively influence their understanding
and performance of the writing process. We also invite
students to work in small groups when they share common
issues or come from the same course. Collaborative peer
work, when facilitated by our tutors, can foster the development
of community and also help student writers grow in relation
to each other. Beyond such positive influence, collaborative
writing in this setting can also mirror practices that
most people will experience in professional life.
