The Office of Student Activities is designed to guide and assist all
student organizations and clubs on the Brooklyn Campus, with regard to the
planning, organizing and implementing of each group's goals, and campus
activities. With the help of Technical Assistant, Mr. Cedric Watson, and
Office Manager, Ms. Kisha Garrett, office oversees all student activities,
clubs and organizations, their budgets, functions and purposes. By
obtaining approval through this Office, students can establish new
organizations; work with the university system on extracurricular
activities, and effect change for the betterment of the student body.
Entering freshman and all students in good academic standing are eligible
to take part in extra-curricular activities programs. Activities as well as
academics provide a balanced education and are therefore encouraged. The
Student Activities program offered through the Office of Student Activities
is funded by the University from the proceeds of the Student Activities
fee. The distribution of the Student Activities Fee promotes a progressive,
student-centered program. Tuition remission is awarded to students who are
executive members of Student Government Association (SGA); Seawanhaka,
the student newspaper; Sound, the yearbook; WLIU Radio and LIU-TV.
The criteria for executive membership of any club or organization include
being a full-time matriculated student with good standing and a GPA of
2.5/4.0, or higher.
The Office also hosts a leadership
training workshop which deals with issues of diversity, time and stress
management, alcohol, drugs, emotional and physical abuse, and rape. In
addition, the Office is responsible for administering the Student Activity
Grant renewable each semester, and which allows students to work 15 hours
per week in exchange for six tuition credits. The grant is based on
activities, academic performance and financial need. In order to receive
the grant students must have 3.0 Grade Point Average, complete at least two
semesters (24 credits) and clear all outstanding balances. This grant is a
great help if you have the time to work the hours.
The Evening Intramurals
Program, also administered by the Office of Student Activities, is a
wonderful way to relax after a hard day of classes, or a great way to keep
fit. The program runs in the gymnasium from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday
through Thursday, and on weekends. It offers self-defense, flag football,
basketball, aerobics, chess, pool, soccer, table tennis, volleyball,
African dance, and a newly equipped weight room. Evening Intramurals is
free and open to all LIU students. If you are interested, just come to the
gym at the times mentioned on the day assigned for your specific sport. For
more activity information come to S-304, call at 718-488-1216 or email Mr.
