December 10th 2002
Evening
Intramurals kicked off its Fall Indoor Soccer Tournament this evening
with ten (10) teams.
This first night pf play consisted of a round robin style
whereby the first two teams to loose two games wouldn’t advance
to the playoff round on December 12th, the last night
of the tournament.
The
first game of the night was between College Boys (1) and
Baseline (0). The
game started with some very attacking soccer from both sides, they
went into the half tied at (0-0). In the second half LIU’s
men soccer standout Wendell Parris found the back of the
net with an assist from Kyle Lee Young.
College Boys were able to hold off Baseline for the (1-0)
victory.
The
second game was even more intense, this featured Taliban (2)
against Thunders (0).
Taliban
lived up to their name and attacked in full force from the opening
whistle and quickly found them one up, with a goal by Ashton.
Even ahead by one goal in the second half the Talibans
kept up the pressure attack and Abede
found the back of the net with a bullet from about 5 yards,
this victory made Taliban one of the favorites for the remainder
of the tournament.
The
third game saw Parkside (2)
defeat Atlas Lion (0). This
game started off very evenly matched with both sides having numerous
opportunities to score. A
few minutes before the half Parkside’s Almoth Hoyte B produced one of the best goals of the tournament,
he dribbled pass one player in midfield went to his left and took
a powerful shot from the left flank that went by the last defender
before he could even react the ball was bouncing around in the back
of the net. This broke the moral of the Atlas Lions, they
came out after the half very tame and once more Hoyte
capitalized with his second of the game, another beauty that
also had to be ranked in the top five goals of the tournament. This victory put Parkside
alongside Taliban as the two favorites and vying for the top two
seeds.
The
fourth game was between Vasco (1) and JJ Youths (1). This was the first game of the tournament
to go into sudden death and be decided by pentitley kicks. Edell
Joefield put JJ Youths ahead in the first half. Five
minutes into the second half Anthony tied up the game for
Vasco. JJ Youths won the coin toss (Pentitleies) kicked
first and missed their pentitley.
Vasco then scored on their first try.
The
fifth game featured, past champions, Cushite
(1) against L.H (0). Both
teams played great defense but a breakdown in L.H gave Cushite
their only opportunity, which Roman capitalized on in the
second half. Cushite
then played very defensive while L.H pressed on for the equalizer
but time was also against them.
The
next game Baseline (2) defeated Thunders (0). This extended Baseline’s season putting
them into the playoff round while Thunders season came to a htitle. Baseline came out with the same style as the
first game very attacking. This
style of play saw them go into the half with a (2-0) lead, thanks
to Kwesi and Sherwyn. They then played defense the entire second
half to preserve the victory.
The
last game of the night JJ Youths (2) vs. Atlas
Lions (1) was one of the more exciting games of the night. Atlas Lions went ahead (1-0) in the first
half thanks to Mohammed Aitkassou. The second half belonged to JJ Youths,
they settled down and played their brand of soccer and quickly equalized
via Junior Bonos, a few minutes
Kerry Celestine took the roar out the Lions with a goal from
midfield, this sent the Atlas Lions home
and JJ Youths onto the playoff round.
The
teams for the December 12th playoff round were all decided
and seated as follows:
Parkside (1)
Vasco (5)
Taliban
(2)
Baseline (6)
Cushite (3)
JJ Youths (7)
College Boys (4) L.H (8)
