4/8/06 -– Long
Island University dropped a 2-0 decision to Central Connecticut
Saturday afternoon in Northeast Conference baseball action. The
two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader but played only
one game due to weather conditions in New Britain, Conn.

in the first five innings of play. LIU registered its biggest
threat in the second inning. Following
the first out of the inning, senior Matt Martino (Staten Island,
N.Y.) singled and stole second. Freshman Anthony Amatucci (Toms
River, N.J.) joined Martino on the bathpaths after being hit
by a pitch and both runners advanced on a right field single
by Brooklyn native Danny Etkin. A double play grounder ended
the
inning and kept the contest scoreless until the sixth.
In the sixth, CCSU’s Sean
Salvatore bunted for a single and advanced to second on a throwing
error
by LIU. He moved to
third on a fly out to centerfield and scored on a wild pitch
during an attempted intentional walk. With two outs and a runner
on first, Jay Schillaci singled to deep right field to plate
another run and give the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead.
The Blue Devils and Blackbirds will continue the weekend series on Sunday with
a doubleheader beginning at noon. The first game will be seven innings followed
