(Box Score)

5/2/06 -- Junior Robbie Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) had three hits as Long Island University outhit Fordham, 14-8, but the Blackbirds dropped their eighth straight game, 5-4, in collegiate baseball action on Tuesday evening.

Freshman Anthony Amatucci (Toms River, N.J.) extended his hitting streak to seven with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate. He also scored two of the Blackbirds’ four runs.

After the Rams scored a run in each of the first two innings, LIU came back to tie the score in the top of the third. A double by Amatucci and two walks loaded the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout by senior Sean Durkin (Damascus, Md.), Amatucci scored on a wild pitch by Fordham starter Ryan Sheflott. Sophomore Danny Etkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with an infield single that tallied another run to knot the game at 2-2.

An RBI groundout by Danny Leach gave the Rams the lead back, 3-2. Two more runs, courtesy of a two-run single by John Mollicone, in the bottom of the fourth pushed their advantage to three.

Rowen’s run-scoring single in the fifth cut the Blackbirds deficit to two, 5-3. LIU would score another run in the sixth but it would be as close as it would come in the defeat.

The Blackbirds had runners in scoring position in each of the final three innings but were unable to score. Their best chance came in the eighth, but with runners on second and third with one out they could not take advantage of the opportunity. LIU left 12 runners on base for the game, its second consecutive game with double-digit runners left on.

Long Island travels to Mount St. Mary’s for a weekend series May 6-7. The three-game set will begin with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
