4/24/06 -– The
Long Island University baseball team dropped a Northeast Conference
baseball doubleheader
against Quinnipiac on Monday afternoon at Bobcat Field
in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats won game one 3-2 in eight
innings
and took game two, 7-0 in a darkness-shortened five-inning
game.
In game one, Anthony Amatucci (Toms
River, N.J.) led off the inning with a single down the left field
line and advanced
to second on a wild pitch. Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.)
singled, also on the left side, and Amatucci advanced to
third. Sophomore Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.J.) brought
Amatucci home on a left side single to make cut the margin
to 2-1. Frank DiMasi (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the
top of the seventh with a pinch-hit homer to left center
to tie
the game at 2-2.
With the bases loaded in the
eighth inning, QU’s Jeff
Mainetti singled to bring home Kevin MacIlvane for the
3-2 victory. The Blackbirds game one starting pitcher Mike
Maynard (Staten Island, N.Y.) allowed two runs, one earned,
on
nine
hits in seven innings. Senior Pete Orsi (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
relieved Maynard allowing one run on three hits.
In game two, Quinnipiac scored
three in the bottom of the first. The home team added two more
runs in the
bottom of third with a two-run double by John Delaney
to stretch
the
lead to 5-0. The Bobcats tacked on two runs in the
bottom of the fourth inning to build a 7-0 lead. Game
play was
suspended after four and a half innings.
Junior Rich Moran (Carmel, N.Y.)
threw three innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on six
hits. He
struck two,
walked two, and falls to 2-7.
LIU will take on St. Peter’s on Tuesday, April 25 at
3:30 pm in Jersey City, N.J. The Blackbirds defeated
St. Peter’s, 7-3 on March 28 at LIU Field.
