3/26/06 --
Freshman Kenny Cedel (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched seven shutout innings in helping the Long Island University baseball team snap its 11-game losing streak with a 7-0 blanking of Northeast Conference foe Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at LIU Field.

Cedel gave up six hits and did not allow a walk while striking out seven in his first collegiate victory. Junior Robbie Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) had two hits and scored three times to lead the Blackbirds offense. Sophomore Danny Etkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also tallied two hits and drove in two.

After a scoreless first inning, Sacred Heart (6-13, 2-1 NEC) threatened in the top of the second. A single, hit by pitch and fielder’s choice on a bunt attempt loaded the bases with nobody out. Cedel was up to the task, striking out third baseman Tim Lantz, enducing Tony Diaz to pop up to second and finally striking out Adam Farino to end the threat.

LIU (2-12-1, 1-2 NEC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the inning. Junior Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.) reached on an infield single with one out and subsequently stole second. After Bryan Burke walked, sophomore Dan Pirillo (Marlboro, N.Y.) took an 0-2 pitch the opposite way for an RBI single that scored Wynn. Burke would score the Blackbirds second run after a failed pickoff attempt by Sacred Heart hurler Jason Hanson got past the first baseman Farino.

Rowen reached on an error in the third inning and scored on Etkin’s bounce out to second, giving LIU a 3-0 lead.

Sacred Heart again loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but the left-handed Cedel came back strong as another strikeout of Farino and a fly out by David Kaloyanides stopped the potential rally.

The Blackbirds were able to tack on an insurance run in the fifth courtesy of a bases-loaded walk by junior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). Two runs in the seventh made the tally 6-0, and an RBI double by Etkin ended the scoring for LIU.

Junior Mike Maynard (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched two shutout innings in relief to close the shutout for the Blackbirds.

The Long Island baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 28 at home against St. Peter’s at 3:00 p.m.
