Junior Robert Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) tallied four hits and
a pair of RBI as the Long Island University baseball team scored
seven unanswered runs to rally for an 11-7 victory over the
University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday afternoon. Junior James Adamo (Parascus,
N.Y.) and sophomore Danny Etkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added three
hits each for the Blackbirds.
Down 7-4 in the top of the sixth,
the Blackbirds tied the score with three runs in the top half
of the inning. Senior Matt Martino (Staten Island, N.Y.) had
a two-out two-run double that scored Etkin and freshman Anthony
Amatucci (Toms River, N.J.). A single by Rowen scored Martino
and knotted the game at 7-7.
After a scoreless seventh, the
Blackbirds exploded for four runs in the eighth. UMES helped
the LIU cause, committing two errors in the inning which led
to two unearned runs. Adamo
had the big hit for the Blackbirds, a two-run single
to right that scored
Martino and Rowen.
Senior southpaw Pete Orsi (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) picked up the victory in relief for LIU. Junior Ryan
Ekberg (Carmel, N.Y.), pitching in his third consecutive game,
went 1 2/3 scoreless innings to get the save.
The Blackbirds travel down south
for their next five contests. They will participate in the
Papa John Baseball Classic in West Palm Beach, Fla. on March
11-16. Seton Hall is their first opponent on Saturday, Mar.
11 at 3:00 p.m.
