2/25/07 --
The Long Island University baseball team suffered its fourth straight loss to open the 2007 season, falling 7-4 at Eastern Kentucky. Freshman Johnnie Neckar (Fort Myers, Fla.) drove in three runs for the Blackbirds, including his first collegiate home run, a solo shot.

Trailing 4-0, Neckar took Eastern Kentucky’s Chris Grider deep in the top of the fifth. The freshman struck again in the sixth inning with a one-out, bases-loaded single that brought home senior James Adamo (Paramus, N.J.) and freshman Gerard Tingos (Staten Island, N.Y.), who both reached on walks.

The Colonels answered back in the bottom of the sixth when Dylan McMaine hit a solo homer off of Blackbirds’ starter Adam Sauter (Kingsville, Md.). The freshman allowed five runs and 10 hits in his first collegiate appearance.

Long Island plated another run in the seventh to cut the score to 5-4. Adamo drew a two-out walk off of David Owens and Tingos drove him in with a single. Eastern Kentucky scored an insurance run in the seventh and another in the ninth, both off senior John Dooley (Deer Park, N.Y.), to secure the win.

Sauter (0-1) was saddled with the loss, while Grider (1-0) earned the win. Eric Hash picked up his first save of the season for the Colonels.

The Blackbirds will return to action with a three-game series at Hartford, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3 at noon.
