(Oakland Box Score)
(Eastern Kentucky Box Score)

2/23/07 --
The Long Island University baseball team opened its season in Richmond, Ky. and dropped a pair of decisions on Friday afternoon. Oakland (Mich.) beat the Blackbirds, 9-2, in the first game and host Eastern Kentucky was victorious, 8-1.

Sophomore Anthony Amatucci (Toms River, N.J.) had a hit in each contest and scored LIU’s lone run in the EKU loss.

Against Oakland in the first game, both teams were held scoreless by strong pitching for the first three innings. Senior Rich Moran (Carmel, N.Y.) and Billy Schmeider kept their opponents at bay before the Golden Grizzlies got on the board with a run in the fourth.

Four runs in the top of the sixth inning from Oakland broke up the pitcher’s duel thanks in part to a Blackbird error that allowed two to score. The
Golden Grizzlies would score four more in the seventh and one in the eighth to make the score 9-0.

Long Island finally got on the board in the ninth as freshman Gerard Tingos (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single and came around to score with two outs. Junior Dan Pirillo (Marlboro, N.Y.) also scored a run in the inning for the Blackbirds.

Moran pitched 5 1/3 innings and surrendered only two earned runs on five hits while striking out two in the loss.

In the nightcap, sophomore pitcher Christian Friedrich pitched six innings of no-hit baseball while striking out seven to lead the Colonels to an 8-1 win. The Blackbirds could muster only two baserunners in the first six
frames.

A two-run single by Matt Davis in the second inning gave Eastern Kentucky a 2-0 advantage. Another run in the fourth and two unearned runs in the fifth inning pushed the Colonel lead to 5-0 after five. With the score 8-0 in the ninth, Long Island tallied its lone run as Amatucci singled, advanced to
second on an error and scored on a single from senior Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.).

Senior Mike Maynard (Staten Island, N.Y.) gave up three earned runs over five innings and took the loss.

LIU will continue its weekend in Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 24 as they will face Oakland again at 10:00 a.m.
