4/21/07 -- The Long Island University baseball team was defeated by Sacred Heart on both ends of a doubleheader in Northeast Conference action. The Blackbirds (7-23, 2-9 NEC) fell in the first game, 3-1, before dropping the second contest by a score of 8-2.

In the first game, the Blackbirds spotted Sacred Heart (16-17, 7-3) an early lead as starter Mike Maynard (Staten Island, N.Y.) allowed a run in the bottom of the first on back-to-back two-out doubles by Bobby McKee and Jeff Hansen. The Pioneers plated another run in the third inning when Jason Maiella drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.

Long Island got on the board with an unearned run in the fourth. Rightfielder Robbie Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) reached on an error by third baseman Steve Tedesco to lead off the inning. One out later, first baseman James Jones (Brooklyn, N.Y.) grounded into a fielder's choice, with Rowen getting thrown out at second. After Jones stole second, shortstop Greg DeSantis (Bridgewater, N.J.) drew a walk to bring up third baseman Gerard Tingos (Staten Island, N.Y.). Tingos singled to right field to score Jones for the Blackbirds' only run of the game.

Sacred Heart added an insurance run in the fifth off of reliever Kenny Cedel (Staten Island, N.Y.). Maiella drove in his second run of the game with a two-out single.

Maynard (2-3) took the loss, allowing two runs in 3 2/3 innings on four hits and two walks. He struck out four. For the second game in a row a Pioneers pitcher threw a complete game, with Jay Monti picking up the win. In seven innings, Monti allowed one run on four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Long Island scored in the first inning of game two when designated hitter Orlando Cruz (White Plains, N.Y.) singled home leftfielder Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.), who had reached on a triple. The lead would not last long as freshman starter Adam Sauter (Perry Hall, Md.) allowed two runs in the bottom of the first frame. With runners on second and third and one out, Hansen hit a two-run single to right to give the Pioneers a 2-1 edge.

Sauter ran into more trouble in the third. Sacred Heart leftfielder Jovan Rodriguez hit a one-out single to score Justin Mulrain. After back-to-back singles scored another run for the Pioneers, Maiella hit a sacrifice fly to give Sacred Heart a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Blackbirds scored a run in the fifth when Cruz hit his second RBI single, this time scoring second baseman Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.), who had doubled to lead off the inning. Sacred Heart answered back in the bottom of the inning with three more runs on three hits.

Sauter (1-3) took the loss. He gave up eight runs on eight hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings of work. Sauter struck out two. Sacred Heart did not have to go to its bullpen for the third straight game as Rob Tencza pitched the full seven innings. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out three.

The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday, April 22, at noon.
