– The Long Island University baseball team suffered a 19-5 defeat at the hands of crosstown rival St. John’s in non-conference action at a rainy LIU Field. St. John’s came from behind, scoring six runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding lead.

The Blackbirds (7-20) jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the first inning. Second baseman Trey Bell (Georgetown, Del.) hit an RBI single to score leadoff hitter Marcus Wynn (Plainfield, N.J.). Rightfielder Robbie Rowen (Rosendale, N.Y.) followed with a double and designated hitter Orlando Cruz (White Plains, N.Y.) drove in both Rowen and Bell with a single. Wynn was the only Blackbird to record more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

After Long Island starter Rich Moran (Carmel, N.Y.) allowed a run in the top of the second, the Blackbirds responded with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. Bell hit a one-out sacrifice fly to left to give Long Island a 4-1 advantage. The lead would not hold, as Moran gave up two more runs in the fourth. Freshman lefthander Paul Lopez (New York, N.Y.) came on to pitch the fourth but struggled. He allowed five runs on four hits and one walk while recording just one out to take the loss. Lopez dropped to 0-2.

St. John’s (21-12) would score two more runs in the fifth to extend their edge to 11-4. The Red Storm scored seven more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Blackbirds return to Northeast Conference play on Friday, April 20 with a four-game series at Sacred Heart.
