Women's Golf Wins Team Portion of Fairfield Invitational

 

3/18/07– After trailing by 13 strokes heading into the final day of competition, the Long Island University women’s golf team put together a tournament-best score of 342 to win the team portion of the Fairfield Invitational by seven strokes. Junior Heather Pothier (Truro, Nova Scotia) led the charge with a final-round 79, which gave her the low round of the tournament. Pothier finished in second place at 165, six strokes behind individual medalist Simone DeSouza of California University of Pennsylvania.

Sophomore Emma Lister (Manchester, England) also had a strong showing, finishing in a tie for third place at 171. Senior Erica Chong (Hilo, Hawaii) was the third Blackbird to record a top-ten finish, tying for 10th at 181.

On the men’s side, senior Patrick Kelly (Brisbane, Australia) finished in a tie for 14th place as the Blackbirds finished in seventh place as a team. Siena’s Bryan Bigley helped lead the Saints to a team title by earning medalist honors and finishing seven strokes ahead of a pair of competitors in second place.

Greg Nicolson (Edinburgh, Scotland) had an impressive second round, recording a two-over-par 74 for the low round by any male participant. He finished in a tie for 18th place at 162.

The men’s team will continue its season at the Towson Invitational on March 30-April 1 while the women will compete in the Longwood Lancer Invitational in Farmville, Va. on April 1-3.
