5/6/07 – Senior
Patrick Kelly (Brisbane, Australia) became the first Long Island
University men's golfer in school history to win the individual
title at the Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championship,
firing
a three-day
total of 217 to win by one stroke over late-charging Anthony
Campanile of Monmouth at the Sea Trail Resort in Sunset Beach,
N.C.on Sunday afternoon.
As a team, the Blackbirds
finished in fourth place, nine strokes behind first-place Monmouth.
Sophomore Greg Nicolson (Edinburgh, Scotland) joined Kelly
as an All-NEC honoree as he ended in a tie for eighth place
at 226.
Entering the day
with a two-shot lead, Kelly shot a final round two-over par
74 and had to sweat out a rally attempt by Campanile, who began
the
day
in 11th place and seven strokes off the pace. The Monmouth
junior shot a four-under par 68 for the tournament-low round
but was
unable
to catch
Kelly,
who won his second tournament of the season (Lonnie Barton
Invitational on March 11-13).
Nicolson was consistent
over the course of the tournament, registering rounds of 75-75-76
for his second top-ten finish of the year and first since the
fall season. Sophomore Kyle Margentina (Homer Glen, Ill.) improved
on his season scoring average by over five strokes to close
in a tie for 30th. Classmate Rob Gallagher shot three straight
rounds of 79 to close two shots behind Margentina in a tie
for 35th.
