Long Island University was recently selected to the Division
I Honor Squad by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches
Association (IWLCA). The Blackbirds were one of 41 teams nationally
to garner the academic honor. The award is bestowed on collegiate
squads who have a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
As a team, LIU boasted a 3.14 cumulative GPA.
In addition to the team's success, juniors Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.)
and Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) were two of just 141 student-athletes named to
the IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll. To earn the honor, student-athletes
must earn a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and have junior or senior academic
standing to be nominated.
McCormick scored 21 goals and added 10 assists for the Blackbirds this past spring.
In addition, she was second on the team in ground balls with 63. A two-sport
athlete at LIU, she was a two-time all-Northeast Conference honoree in soccer.
She finished her soccer career as the program’s all-time leader in assists
and second leading scorer. McCormick was named a Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete
award winner by the NEC in December.
Rizzo, a first team All-NEC selection, notched a team-best 55 goals and a team
second-best 22 assists this season. She finished her junior campaign ranked 12th
in the NCAA in scoring (3.18 goals per game) and 14th in points per game (4.47).
Rizzo has 134 goals in her three-year career for the Blackbirds.
