Senior Chrissie Carleton (Jackson,
N.J.) tallied two goals and four assists but it was not
enough as the Long Island University lacrosse team dropped
an 11-9 decision to Fairfield University on Thursday afternoon.
Junior Amy
Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) and seniors Jackie
McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Nichole
Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) each had two goals for the
Blackbirds (0-2).
Down two goals with a little
over 10 minutes to play, Lopez and Carleton scored 32 seconds
apart to knot the game at 9-9.
Fairfield's Caitlin Keane accepted
a Beth Loffredo pass
and
scored the game-winning goal for the
Stags with 6:18 to play. Loffredo added an insurance goal on
a free position shot at the 3:28 mark to secure the 11-9 Fairfield
win.
LIU started strong, jumping out
to a 5-2 advantage at the end of the first half. The Blackbirds
scored four unanswered goals to complete the stanza and go
into halftime
with
a three-goal lead.
Ashley Chappell jump-started
the Stags as she notched all three of her goals in a 41-second
span to start the second half. Following a Rizzo goal, Fairfield
would add three more goals to give the team its largest advantage
of the game, 8-6.
Freshman Kimberly Campbell (Malvern,
Pa.) registered the loss in her first career start in net but tallied
10 saves.
The lacrosse team travels to
California to take on UC-Davis on Monday, Mar. 13 at 4:00 p.m.
