Lacrosse Falls in NEC Opener to Monmouth, 18-5

-- The Long Island University women’s lacrosse team dropped its first game in Northeast Conference play to Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. on Friday afternoon.

Senior Nichole Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) led the Blackbirds with two goals, a pair of assists and scooped up six ground balls.

Freshman Allison Funk (Lumberton N.J.) tallied two goals and Chrissie Carleton (Jackson, N.J.) added a goal and an assist for LIU (1-5, 0-1 NEC).

Goalkeeper Kim Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) recorded six saves in her third start of the season.

The Hawks’ scored their first goal just 26 seconds into the game. At the 26:04 mark, Lopez and Funk connected to pull LIU to a one goal deficit (1-2). Monmouth scored three consecutive goals before Lopez found the net to cut the advantage to 2-5.

MU extended its lead to 3-11 at the break behind a 6-1 run that featured three goals from Carolyn Raveia.

Lopez and Funk each scored a goal in the second period but the Blackbirds could not hold off Monmouth, falling 18-5.

Raveia paced the Hawks with five goals. Katie Degen chipped fouls goals and an assist. Jeanette Stott scored two goals and dished out five assists.

LIU will host Sacred Heart on Sunday, March 26. Game time is at 5:00 pm.
