-- The Long Island University women’s lacrosse team scored three goals late in the second half, but came up short to Le Moyne, losing 9-8 on Friday afternoon at LIU Field. The Blackbirds’ late charge was led by senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.), who finished the day with three goals and two assists.

Le Moyne (3-1) appeared to take a comfortable lead with just over 10 minutes to play when Amanda Burgoon’s goal made it 10-5, but LIU mounted a late charge to make the game interesting. McCormick struck for her second goal of the day with four minutes to play on an unassisted effort.

Senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) scored just over two minutes later off a feed from McCormick to cut the deficit to 9-7. McCormick got LIU to within one goal with just over one minute remaining on her third goal of the day. Le Moyne managed to hang on, however, by gaining the draw control and running out the clock.

McCormick finished the day with three goals and two assists, while Rizzo added two goals and three assists. Sophomore Kim Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) made nine saves to keep the Blackbirds close.

LIU (0-2) jumped out to an early lead when freshman Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.) scored off a pass from Rizzo. After Le Moyne leveled the score, junior Sam Fischbeck (Baltimore, Md.) scored on an assist from junior Xiomara Garcia (Pottstown, Pa.) to make it 2-1 midway through the first half.

After Rizzo scored to make it 3-2 in favor of the Blackbirds, the Dolphins responded with three straight goals to take the lead for good and make it 5-3. Sophomore Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) scored with just over one minute left in the half to cut the deficit to one, but Le Moyne’s Kylie Rosette scored off a free position shot with 12 seconds left in the half to make it 6-4 at halftime.

Following another goal from Rosette to start the second half, LIU got within 7-5 when McCormick scored off a pass from Rizzo. The Dolphins pushed the lead to 9-5 following goals from Amanda Keegan and the eventual game-winner from Burgoon.

Rosette led Le Moyne with two goals and an assist, while Burgoon chipped in with two goals. Samantha Falcone made three saves in net for the Dolphins, who held a 27-18 advantage in shots.

The Blackbirds travel to Wellington, Fla., for “SpringFling”. LIU will play Bucknell on Monday, March 12, at 7:00 p.m. and Marist on Wednesday, March 14, at noon.
