Senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored five goals,
but it was not enough as the Long Island University women’s
lacrosse team had its three-game win streak snapped at Mount
St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon by a score of 10-9. A
goal from Kathleen Rossetti with just 47 seconds to play provided
the difference in a game that clinched homefield advantage
for Mount in the upcoming Northeast Conference Tournament.
McCormick’s fifth goal
of the day gave LIU (5-9, 3-4 NEC) broke a tie halfway through
the second half
and after freshman
Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) scored a pass from sophomore
Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) LIU went up 8-6 with 12:28 to
play.
However, Mount St. Mary’s (7-6, 7-0 NEC) responded with
three unanswered goals to storm back into the lead. Following
a goal by Kathleen Rossetti, the Mountaineers drew even at the
8:37 mark following a goal from Rebecca Douglass. Katelyn Cantanese’s
fifth score of the day put The Mount up 9-8.
Long Island managed to tie the
score with under three minutes to play on a goal from freshman
Christie Wienckowski
(Newton
Square, Pa.), but the winning goal came from Rossetti with just
47 seconds to play, making it 10-9 for Mount St. Mary’s.
In a crucial game in the league standings, LIU took an early
lead off a goal from Wienckowski just over a minute into play.
The Mountaineers responded with two straight goals, but McCormick
had two solo efforts of her own to give LIU a 3-2 lead early
on. After a goal from Cantanese tied the game, LIU took the lead
into halftime when Wienckowski scored off a free-position shot
with 2:55 left in the half.
The teams alternated the first five scores of the second half.
Mount opened the scoring at 27:27 when Rossetti tied the game.
McCormick had a pair of goals for LIU, sandwiched around a score
from Catanese for Mount. Rossetti tied the game at 6-6 with 18:35
to play, setting up the back-and-forth finish.
Long Island was outshot, 35-18.

Pa.) made 10 saves in net for the Blackbirds, while Jane Karger
