3/25/07 -- The Long Island University
women’s
lacrosse team suffered a 16-8 loss at the hands of Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats scored the first three goals of the game and proceeded
to hold off any Blackbird charge, as Quinnipiac led for the
entire game.
Senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.),
sophomore Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) and freshman Christie
Wienckowski (Newtown
Square, Pa.) each tallied two goals to lead Long Island. The Bobcats (4-3, 2-0 Northeast Conference) got on the board
less than two minutes into the game when Ashley Valentine passed
to Nicole Fiore for a goal. Quinnipiac added two more goals over
the next two minutes before Long Island broke through with its
first goal on a free position shot by Wienckowski.
Fiore put the Bobcats up 4-1
with a free position goal of her own, but LIU answered back
with an unassisted goal
by Rizzo.
Quinnipiac scored three more times before Wienckowski found the
back of the net again with 43 seconds left in the first half.
Quinnipiac’s Janelle Lopez responded with a goal with 17
seconds left on the clock to send the teams to the half with
the Bobcats leading 8-3.
Long Island (1-6, 0-2) did not fare much better in the second
half, as the Blackbirds were outscored 8-5 during the frame.
Freshmen Jillian Maricondo (Levittown, N.Y.) and Elise Victoria
(Baltimore, Md.) each added goals in the second half for LIU.
The Blackbirds were outshot by
a 37-22 margin. Quinnipiac scooped up 20 ground balls, compared
to Long Island’s 12. LIU goalie
Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) made 11 saves; Quinnipiac’s
Hannah Nelson stopped nine shots.
Long Island will host Howard on Wednesday, March 28 at 4:00
p.m.
