-- The Long Island University women’s lacrosse team suffered a 16-8 loss at the hands of Quinnipiac. The Bobcats scored the first three goals of the game and proceeded to hold off any Blackbird charge, as Quinnipiac led for the entire game.

Senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.), sophomore Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.) and freshman Christie Wienckowski (Newtown Square, Pa.) each tallied two goals to lead Long Island.

The Bobcats (4-3, 2-0 Northeast Conference) got on the board less than two minutes into the game when Ashley Valentine passed to Nicole Fiore for a goal. Quinnipiac added two more goals over the next two minutes before Long Island broke through with its first goal on a free position shot by Wienckowski.

Fiore put the Bobcats up 4-1 with a free position goal of her own, but LIU answered back with an unassisted goal by Rizzo. Quinnipiac scored three more times before Wienckowski found the back of the net again with 43 seconds left in the first half. Quinnipiac’s Janelle Lopez responded with a goal with 17 seconds left on the clock to send the teams to the half with the Bobcats leading 8-3.

Long Island (1-6, 0-2) did not fare much better in the second half, as the Blackbirds were outscored 8-5 during the frame. Freshmen Jillian Maricondo (Levittown, N.Y.) and Elise Victoria (Baltimore, Md.) each added goals in the second half for LIU.

The Blackbirds were outshot by a 37-22 margin. Quinnipiac scooped up 20 ground balls, compared to Long Island’s 12. LIU goalie Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) made 11 saves; Quinnipiac’s Hannah Nelson stopped nine shots.

Long Island will host Howard on Wednesday, March 28 at 4:00 p.m.
