4/9/07 --
Senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) was
named the women’s
lacrosse Northeast Conference Player of the Week for the week
ending April 8 after leading Long Island University to a pair
of conference wins. Rizzo collected her first weekly award
this year after leading LIU past Robert Morris, 13-12, and
Saint Francis (Pa.), 20-4.
Rizzo led the Blackbirds with
13 points, on 11 goals and two assists last week. She also
picked up four ground
balls and nine
draw controls in a pair of conference contests. In the triple-overtime
win against Robert Morris, Rizzo scored a team-high six goals
on just eight shots to carry LIU to its first conference win
of the year. In Sunday’s win over Saint Francis (Pa.),
the senior attacker tallied five goals and an assist to lead
LIU to a dominating win. She also added a game-high five draw
controls in the victory.
Rizzo currently has a 23-game point-scoring streak and has posted
at least five points in three consecutive games. She has also
tallied five or more goals on three occasions this year and leads
the Blackbirds with 49 points on 37 goals and 12 assists. Rizzo
currently ranks second in the NEC in goals per game (3.08) and
points per game (4.08). Her totals have her ranked 17th nationally
in goals per game and 24th in points per game.
This was the third NEC Player of the Week award for Rizzo after
earning it award once during the 2006 season and once during
the 2005 season, after being named Rookie of the Week once as
a freshman.
The Blackbirds (4-8, 2-3 Northeast Conference) return to action
on Friday, April 13, when they host NEC foe Central Connecticut
State in a 4:00 p.m. game at LIU Field.
