3/23/07-- The Long Island women’s lacrosse team
was shutout for the first 27 minutes and fell at Saint Joseph’s,
19-4, on Friday night at Finnesey Field.
The Blackbirds (2-7) had scored a program-record 24 goals on
Wednesday against Howard, but were outshot 29-12 and after falling
behind by a 10-0 deficit to the Hawks, they were unable to overcome
the early hole.
Senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) recorded a goal and an assist
to lead LIU, while three other players tallied a single goal.
SJU was led by Lindsey McCool and Christina Colangelo, who each
notched three goals.
Saint Joseph’s (4-2) opened
the scoring on a goal by Jessica Westlake just 44 seconds into
play. The
Hawks did not let up
on the attack from there, posting four more goals in the first
eight minutes to go ahead, 5-0. SJU built the lead to 10-0 at
the 3:49 mark when McCool recorded her third goal of the contest.
The Blackbirds notched two goals before halftime, getting unassisted
efforts from freshman Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.)
and Rizzo to make it 10-2, but SJU put the game away early in
the second stanza by scoring four straight goals in the opening
nine minutes. Abby Renninger scored consecutive goals to make
it 14-2 before freshman Danielle Laird (West Chester, Pa.) scored
on a free position shot.
Saint Joseph’s rattled
off three more goals before senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool,
N.Y.) scored off
a feed from Rizzo
to make it 17-4. The Hawks added two late tallies to round out
the scoring.
Sophomore Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) posted six saves
for LIU.
Long Island returns to action on Sunday, April 1, with a game
at Noon on Staten Island, N.Y., against Wagner.
