Blackbirds Drop Close Contest at Wagner, 13-10

/07-- The Long Island University women’s lacrosse team dropped a close contest to Wagner, 13-10, on Sunday afternoon at Wagner Stadium.

The Blackbirds (2-8, 0-3 Northeast Conference) held a 6-5 lead at halftime on the strength of two goals apiece from senior Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) and freshman Christie Wienckowski (Newton Square, Pa.). However, Wagner (2-6, 1-2 NEC) rallied in the second half, scoring the first three goals of the half to take the lead and held off LIU the rest of the way.

Rizzo led Long Island with three goals and two assists, while Wienckowski finished with two goals and an assist. Freshman Kristina Scheerer (West Chester, Pa.) added a pair of goals. Sophomore Kimberly Campbell (Malvern, Pa.) finished with 10 saves.

LIU took the lead an early lead when Wienckowski scored off a pass from sophomore Allison Funk (Lumberton, N.J.). After Wagner tallied the next two scores, LIU got an unassisted tally from senior Kelly Betancur (Orlando, Fla.) and a goal from Funk to forge ahead 3-2 just eight minutes into the game.

The Seahawks regained the lead with a goals from Cara Gonzalez and Jessica Ellis just 16 seconds apart to go ahead 4-3 at the 11:03 mark. Rizzo knotted the game with her first score at the 5:22 mark and after a Wagner score, she tied the game off a feed from Betancur before Wienckowski scored with 3:23 left in the period to make it 6-5 LIU at the half.

Wagner came out firing in the second half when Krista Malayter tied the game and started a run of three-straight goals for the hosts. Kelly Blundin followed eight seconds later to give the Seahawks a 7-6 lead and Janine Bright stretched the lead further at the 24:18 mark to make it 8-6.

Senior Jackie McCormick (Liverpool, N.Y.) got LIU within one on an unassisted goal at the 21:05 mark, but Wagner followed by running off the next three goals to push the lead to 11-7. Scheerer scored to get LIU back to 11-8, but Malayter tallied again for Wagner. The Blackbirds mounted a late rally getting goals from Rizzo at the 3:34 mark and another from Scheerer with 1:37 to play to make the score 12-10, but Wagner added a goal just before the buzzer to finish the scoring.

Ellis led Wagner with three goals, while Gonzalez finished with a goal and six assists. Alex Johnston posted 13 saves in a winning effort.

Long Island returns to action on Thursday, April 5, with a 6:00 p.m. game against Robert Morris at LIU Field.
