3/30/05 -- Sophomore Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) broke her own school record with seven goals and tied her own mark with eight points for Long Island University in an 11-8 Northeast Conference victory over Central Connecticut State on the campus of C.W. Post in Brookville, N.Y.

Rizzo’s goal output bests her mark of six set against Canisius on March 11, when she also compiled eight points. The goals and assists plateaus are tied for the third best totals in NCAA Division I lacrosse this season, both one off the top spot. Rizzo entered the week tied for 16th in the nation with 3.0 goals per contest.

Rizzo, a first team All-NEC pick last season, posted a natural hat trick over the first 8:01 thanks to some solid driving toward the net to give the Blackbirds (2-4, 1-0 NEC) a 3-0 lead. Abby Hayes scored a free-position goal to bring the Blue Devils (1-5, 0-2) within 3-2 before LIU scored four straight for a 7-2 halftime lead. Rizzo and sophomore Kayleigh Graves (Orlando, Fla.) each netted a pair in that stretch.

Junior Ashley Cockram (Orlando, Fla.) scored with 13:20 to play as LIU opened a 10-4 lead. CCSU netted four straight, including two from Abbey Capobianco and the last from Danielle Adams with 3:02 left, to close to 10-8. But the Blackbirds’ defense took over from there and Rizzo buried her team-leading 22nd goal of the year to cap the scoring.

Junior Chrissie Carleton (Jackson, N.J.) also scored once and added two assists for the Blackbirds, who gained a 25-24 shots advantage. Rizzo, junior Nichole Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) and freshman Xiomara Garcia (Pottstown, Pa.) had an assist, and senior Patricia Parker (Long Branch, N.J.) made 12 saves for her second victory of the year.

Hayes and Capobianco each recorded a hat trick with Kathryn Hughes also scoring for the Blue Devils. Hayes and Amy Clark had an assist apiece and Amanda Zabel totaled 12 saves.

LIU visits Sacred Heart on Friday for another Northeast Conference battle. First draw is at 4:00 pm in Fairfield, Conn.
