4/15/2005 – Long Island University dropped a 12-7 decision
to Monmouth University in Northeast Conference women’s
lacrosse action at the Parade Ground in Prospect Park this afternoon.
Chrissie Carleton (Jackson, N.J.) , Nichole Lopez (Highland
Mills, N.Y.) and Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) each scored two goals,
but it was not enough as the Blackbirds (4-7, 3-3 NEC) could
not overcome an early 5-0 deficit.
Monmouth (10-3, 5-0 NEC) got off to a fast start, registering
three goals in the first 2:12 of play. Junior attacker Jeanette
Stott registered the first two scores for the Hawks. The Hawks
used a balanced attack, opening up a 5-0 lead following tallys
from sophomores Carolyn Raveia and Katie Degan at the 24:58 and
20:40 marks, respectively.
LIU answered back at the 20:27 mark, as Rizzo
buried a free-position shot, cutting the lead to 5-1. Just
over a minute later, the
sophomore found the net – again- on a free-position shot,
to cut the margin to 5-2.
Monmouth went on a three-goal run over the next 11 minutes to
take an 8-2 advantage. Lopez ended the run with 8:32 left in
the first half, as she took a pass from Carleton and beat Hawks
netminder Jess Chapman for her first goal of the game. Monmouth
scored the next two goals before Lopez put the ball in the cage
for the second time to pull to 10-4 at intermission.
Raveia opened up the scoring in the second frame, recording
her second goal 1:26 into the second stanza and Degan registered
a hat trick with her third goal seven minutes later to give the
visitors a comfortable 12-4 cushion.
The Blackbirds did not allow any goals the rest of the way,
recording the last three of the game. Sophomore Kayleigh Graves
(Orlando, Fla.) tallied her first goal with just over 18 minutes
to play and Carleton registered the final two goals, the first
unassisted and the second off a breakaway pass from Tina Prickett
(Eldora, N.J.), for the final margin (12-7).
Lopez made noise all over the field, pacing the Blackbirds with
six ground balls, causing two turnovers and picking up two draw
controls. Senior Trish Parker (Long Branch, N.J.), playing in
her final home game for LIU, registered her seventh contest with
double digit saves this season with 11.
Degan finished with five points – three goals, two assists – and
Stott scored four goals for the Hawks who are tied for first
in the NEC with Mount St. Mary’s. Chapman recorded the
win for Monmouth, making five saves.
The Blackbirds return to action Tuesday, April 19, as they travel
to Stony Brook for a 7:00 pm game.
