Lacrosse Falls to Wagner, 17-12

4/24/2005 – Junior Nichole Lopez (Highland Mills, N.Y.) scored three goals and added two assists, but it was not enough as Long Island fell 17-12, to Wagner in Northeast Conference women’s college lacrosse action this afternoon in Staten Island.

The teams traded goals to open the game for a 2-2 tie at the 18:49 mark. Wagner took control, netting five straight over the next eight minutes to take a 7-2 advantage. Heather George tallied twice during the run.

Sophomore Amy Rizzo (Jackson, N.J.) and junior Chrissie Carleton (Jackson, N.J.) scored back-to-back goals with Lopez setting up both scores for a 7-4 margin.

Darby Biggart and Breanna Burgess completed their hat tricks at the 4:13 and 1:10 marks respectively. Anne Thomas tallied with 12 seconds to play as the Seahawks took a 10-4 lead into the half.

Wagner scored 29 seconds into the second half for an 11-4 edge. Kelly Moletress (Pottstown, Pa.) capitalized on a free-position opportunity at the 25:35 mark, to cut the lead to 11-5. Lopez scored an unassisted goal with 17:57 to play.

The Seahawks got another score from Biggart at the 17:32 mark, before junior Elaine Bonilla’s (Pennsauken, N.J.) unassisted tally made it a 12-7 contest with 14:09 showing. Leann Matta put the game out of reach for Wagner with back-to-back scores.

The pace picked up in the final three minutes, as the Blackbirds were not ready to give up. At the 2:41 mark, Moletress completed her hat-trick off a pass from Rizzo. Rizzo then scored her third on a free-position shot with 1:57 to go, for a 15-11 margin.

Matta had five goals and added four assist and Biggart had five goals with an assist for Wagner, who earned the number four seed in the NEC Tournament. Goalkeeper Erica Brown got the win registering 17 saves.

Carlton finished the game with two goals and an assist as junior Amanda Childress (Leonardtown, Md.) suffered the loss in net for LIU, making 14 saves.

The Blackbirds will play their season finale on Wednesday, April 27 in Binghamton at 4:00 pm.
