Junior guard James Williams (DeSoto, Texas) notched his 60th
career game in double figures, scoring 20 points to lead
Long Island University to an 80-65 triumph over Sacred Heart
on Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. The Blackbirds
(7-12, 4-6 Northeast Conference) have won three of their
past four games.
Williams connected on six field goals, all from 3-point range,
tying a season-high for triples in a game. Guard Aubin Scott
(Hempstead, N.Y.) added 15 points, 13 in the first half.
Sophomore guard Randy Jones (West Palm Beach, Fla.) had 14
points, including an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw
line in the game’s final three minutes. Sophomore forward
Kellen Allen (Mansfield, Texas) registered a career-high
11 rebounds and eight points.
Tied at 14-14 at the 9:59 mark of the first half, the Blackbirds
scored 10 of the game’s next 11 points to lead 24-15.
It was a lead they would not relinquish as the run commenced
with a 3-pointer from Scott and was capped off by a Williams’ triple.
LIU led 36-30 at the break
The Pioneers pulled to four, 36-32 early in the second behind
the play of the league’s leading scorer Kibwe Trim.
The Blackbirds, however, had an answer with a flurry of trifectas.
Williams drained three straight in a three-minute span to
push ahead, 53-38 with 13:32 showing. LIU led by double-digits
the remainder of the contest en route to the 80-65 victory.
The Blackbirds coming off a 45 percent effort from the free
throw line on Thursday at Fairleigh Dickinson, posted a 72.4
percent showing from the stripe.
LIU out-rebounded Sacred Heart, 35-31. The Blackbirds bench
posted a 33-8 scoring advantage.
