guard James Williams (DeSoto, Texas) had 17 points and sophomore
forward Eugene Kotorobai (Richmond Hill, Ontario) added 11
to lead Long Island University to a 75-60 Northeast Conference
victory over Wagner College on Friday evening at Spiro Sports
Center.
With the victory, the Blackbirds (11-15, 8-9) secured a
berth in the NEC Tournament next week. LIU has posted
four straight
victories over the Seahawks, completing its second straight
season sweep of its rival.
Tied at 11-11 at the 13:59 mark of the first stanza,
LIU ran off the game’s next 14 points to take a imposing 25-11
advantage. A Williams’ 3-pointer commenced the spurt
and Kotorobai concluded it with his second triple in the 14-0
four-minute
burst.
The Blackbirds led 41-30 at the half with 11 of their 15 field
goals coming from 3-point territory. They drained a first half
season high 11 trifecas, shooting 55 percent from long range
in the period.
A 3-pointer from Matt Vitale to open the second stanza cut
the lead to 41-33 but Wagner could get no closer. LIU led by
as many
as 21 (73-52) late in the game following a pair of free throws
from sophomore Paska Morkelinuas.
The Blackbirds connected on 16 three-pointers, tying a season
high. Williams and Kotorobai combined for eight. LIU committed
a season-low seven turnovers, tying its earlier meeting with
Wagner on Jan. 28.
Long Island concludes its regular season on Monday, February
27 hosting rival St. Francis (NY) at 7:00 p.m. The contest will
be broadcast on Fox NY and marks the official opening of the
Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center on the Brooklyn campus.
