Men's Soccer falls at #3 Duke, 2-0

9/01/05 - Long Island University opened its 2005 season, falling at #3 Duke, 2-0 at Koskinen Stadium on Thursday evening.

Chris Loftus and Mike Grella each scored a goal to lead the Blue Devils in the regular season opener for both teams.

Loftus put Duke on the board in the first half with a header past sophomore goalkeeper Alex Fatovic at the 35:46 mark in the first half. Loftus had put two previous headers on target but Fatovic made the save on each one.

In the second half, Grella, gave the Blue Devils some breathing room from the pesky Blackbirds.

Fatovic was excellent between the pipes, finishing with seven saves. Sophomore Ryan Vanderkin had two of the three shots in the game for LIU, including its lone shot on goal.

The Blackbirds kick off their home season on Tuesday, September 6, hosting Manhattan.
