9/25/05--Long Island University, the defending Northeast Conference champions, battled Monmouth University to a scoreless double overtime draw in the league opener for each squad.

In a battle of solid goalkeeping, LIU’s Alex Fatovic (Falls Church, Va.) and Monmouth’s Art Satterwhite each posted a shutout. By virtue of the tie, each team received a point in the always competitive NEC standings.

Fatovic tied a season-high with seven saves, including two decisive stops in the second overtime. The sophomore netminder punched aside a volley by freshman Rich Baker and kicked away a shot by junior Steven Holloway to preserve the scoreless contest.

The Hawks posted a 21-13 shot advantage, including a 15-5 difference in the second half and overtime periods. Michael Marten (Ogden, Ill.) and Daniel Barci (Thessalonki, Greece) recorded three shots apiece for the Blackbirds.

LIU (2-4-1) returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 traveling to Adelphi for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
