10/09/05 -- Phillip Rub and Dino Salaris each netted a goal to lead Mount St. Mary's past Long Island 2-0 in Northeast Conference men's soccer action on Sunday.

Mohammad Mashriqi (Flushing, N.Y.) led the Blackbirds (3-5-1, 0-1-1 NEC) with four shots while goalkeeper Alex Fatovic (Falls Church, Va.) posted two saves in the loss.

The two teams battled for 56 minutes before the Mountaineers scored two goals in a span of three minutes and 48 seconds to take control of the contest and go on for the victory.

Long Island, who tallied eight corner kicks in the contest, had several scoring chances in the game, but could not convert. Right out of the gate, Mashriqi had his shot turned away by goalkeeper Mark Murphy in the second minute and then the Mount goalkeeper stopped a Daniel Barci (Thessalonki, Greece) shot in the fifth minute.

After Murphy stopped Mashriqi again in the 34th minute, the Blackbirds' freshman missed wide in the 67th minute. Barci gave Long Island its final shot in the 82nd minute, but Murphy was there to keep the shutout intact.

The game was played on the MSM Soccer Practice Field due to heavy rain from the last two days.
