different Blackbirds registered goals to lift Long Island University
to a 3-1 victory over host Quinnipiac in Northeast Conference
men’s soccer action on Sunday. LIU is now 5-8-1 overall
and 2-4-1 in the NEC.
The Bobcats broke the scoreless
stalemate on a goal from Francis Mavula with less than five
minutes remaining in the first half. The
Blackbirds tied the contest in the 71st minute on a score from
senior Mustapha Ayoub (Toronto, Ontario), his fourth goal of
the season. Ayoub scored off a pass from Mohammad Mashriqi (Flushing,
N.Y.).
Knotted at 1-1, freshman Jukka Lehto (Lahti, Finland) registered
the game-winner in the 86th minute off a left cross from Ayoub.
LIU got an insurance goal from freshman Adam Kelemet (Morris
Plains, N.J.), his first of the season, two minutes later from
another Ayoub assist. Goalkeeper Jeremy Wimer (Shreveport, La.)
recorded eight saves and played 90 minutes. The Blackbirds held
a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Blackbirds host conference opponent Robert Morris on Friday,
November 4 at 4:00 p.m.
