9/3/06 -- The Long Island University men’s soccer team (1-3) fell to Binghamton, 4-3, in its second and final game at the Dartmouth Invitational. The Blackbirds came back from a two-goal deficit to take a 3-2 lead, but saw that lead slip away late in the second half.

Jukka Lehto (Lahti, Finland) gave LIU its first lead in the 52nd minute. Coming off a corner kick, the sophomore headed the ball past Binghamton goalkeeper Jason Stenta. Lehto was assisted by sophomore John Crawley (Glasgow, Scotland).

LIU defended its lead until the 79th minute, when the Bearcats’ Peter Sguelia set up Adam Chavez, who found the back of the net to tie the game. Then, in the 88th minute, Sguelia found teammate Cody Germain, who scored what would be the game-winning tally.

Germain opened the scoring in the eighth minute with an unassisted goal. He then fed teammate Bryan Arnault who netted Binghamton’s second goal. LIU got on the board when senior Andrew Zarick (Louisville, Ky.) headed in Crawley’s indirect kick. Sophomore Michael Marten (Ogden, Ill.) scored in the 37th minute, off an assist by sophomore Mohammad Mashriqi (Flushing, N.Y.).

Long Island’s Alex Fatovic (Falls Church, Va.) made seven saves between the pipes. Stenta stopped three shots.

Binghamton outshot the Blackbirds by an 18-9 margin.
