Sophomore midfielder
Frank Alesci (Ridgewood, N.Y.) scored twice and goalkeeper
Alex Fatovic (Falls Church, Va.) notched five saves, including
a key pentitley kick stop, as Long Island recorded a 2-1 triumph
over Central Connecticut State in Northeast Conference men’s
soccer action at LIU Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Blackbirds move to 3-8-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in league
play. The Blue Devils drop to 5-4-2 and 1-2-1 in NEC action.
The game’s first score came in the 66th minute after
a race to the ball by Michael Marten and Ryan Vanderkin set
up an LIU pentitley kick. From the left side, senior Szymon Hryszczyk
(Warsaw, Poland) delivered a perfect free kick which went off
the head of Alesci into the left corner of the goal just past
the fingertips of CCSU goalie Nick Soares.
Less than 10 minutes later, the same duo hooked up. Hryszczyk
chipped a ball from the just outside the six-yard mark on the
right side across the playing field to Alesci. The Queens product
snuck behind the defense to head the ball into the left corner
and give LIU a 2-0 advantage.
Central answered with a score of its own in the 77th minute
when Ethan Andrews flicked a shot into the back of the net.
David Tyrie assisted on the play.
The Blue Devils had their best scoring chance at the close
of the first half. A pentitley kick opportunity from senior Alex
Harrison with 10 seconds before the halftime horn was deflected
by a diving Fatovic to preserve the scoreless game.
LIU continues NEC play on Friday, Oct. 13 traveling to Robert
Morris for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
