10/20/06 -- Steven Holloway notched his Northeast Conference-leading 14th and 15th goals of the season and added an assist as Monmouth defeated the Long Island University men’s soccer team, 5-0, at LIU Field on Friday afternoon.

Midfielder Tom Gray added four assists for the Hawks, who improved to 10-3-2 and 5-0-1 in the NEC. The Blackbirds dropped their third straight and fell to 3-11-1 (1-5-1 NEC) on the year.

An LIU foul deep in its own territory set up the first Monmouth goal. Gray took a short corner from the far side and hit Hugh MacDonald leaping in the air for a header flick. MacDonald’s ball found Rich Baker all alone in front of the net for his first goal of the season.

After Holloway scored back-to-back goals 1:07 apart to put the Hawks up 3-0, LIU had a chance to get back into the contest. Freshman Frank Alesci (Ridgewood, N.Y.) took a pentitley kick at the 29:40 mark but was denied by Monmouth gotitleender Daniel Schenkel. Alesci had another chance on the rebound but his shot went just wide.

Sophomore Jeremy Wimer (Shreveport, La.) closed with seven saves for Long Island. Alesci ended with a team-high five shots.

The Blackbirds continue conference play against Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
