-- Sophomores Michael Marten (Odgen, Ill.) and Josh Merchant
(New Orleans, La.) each tallied goals as the Long Island University
men’s soccer team dueled to a 2-2 tie with Mount St. Mary’s
at LIU Field on Sunday afternoon.
LIU came out of the gates firing and scored the game’s first
goal in the 15th minute. Defender Johnny Chavez (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
gained midfield and hit a ball down the left side that found Merchant.
The left-footer gunned a cross pass to Marten who deposited the
ball into the upper-right corner of the goal for his fourth tally
this season.
Less than 10 minutes later, Merchant was the recipient of a through-ball
from freshman Ryan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) on the left side.
Merchant’s shot slid by Mount goalkeeper Mark Murphy to push
LIU’s advantage to 2-0.
Mount St. Mary’s would cut the lead in half at the 32:02
mark, as a free kick from the short corner by Vinnie Berry found
the head of Steven Cant. Cant’s header beat LIU goalie Alex
Fatovic (Falls Church, Va.) for his second goal of the year.
The second half and overtime produced some excitement, and in the
64th minute, a chip pass from Cant found Alex Kem, who notched
his first career goal to tie the game.
Each team had a few golden opportunities in overtime but could
not convert. With 20 seconds remaining, Brandon Moncrief headed
a corner kick that was deflected by a Blackbird defender just over
the cross bar to keep the game tied.
Murphy finished the game with 11 saves for Mount, while Fatovic
closed with a pair.
Long Island concludes its season on Sunday, Oct. 29 against local
rival St. Francis (N.Y.) at 12:00 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader
with the women’s team and will also be senior day for a
pair of Blackbirds: Szymon Hryszczyk and Andrew Zarick.
