10/6/06 -- Freshman Ryan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the year as the Long Island University men’s soccer team picked up its first conference point of the season with a 1-1 tie against Quinnipiac at LIU Field on Friday evening.

Senior Szymon Hryszczyk (Warsaw, Poland) assisted on the tally in the 52nd minute of the match that broke a scoreless tie. A thru-ball from Hryszczyk found Williams on the right side. The left-footer made an inside move back to the middle and fired from about 15 yards out, beating the goalie to the lower-left corner of the goal.

After the score, the Bobcats turned up the intensity and had a number of chances from close range. Junior goalkeeper Alex Fatovic (Falls Church, Va.) made two point-blank saves against Quinnipiac’s Graciano Brito to keep the Blackbirds in the lead.

The Bobcats would finally break through in the 68th minute, as Alexander Achigbu corralled a drop pass from Francis Mavula and deposited the ball into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1.

Long Island had a great opportunity in the 2nd minute of the first overtime for the golden goal. Junior Ryan Vanderkin (Plymouth, Wisc.), who just missed wide on a shot in the 82nd minute of regulation, made a cross from the right side. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Paul Fleck deflected the ball right to sophomore Mohammad Mashriqi (Flushing, N.Y.), who blasted a shot that was saved by a Bobcat defender right at the goal line to preserve the tie.

Fatovic finished with seven saves for the Blackbirds. Freshman Frank Alesci (Ridgewood, N.Y.) recorded a team-high four shots, while Brito led Quinnipiac with four shots.

LIU continues NEC play on Sunday, Oct. 8 with a home match against Central Connecticut State at 1:00 p.m.
