Men's Soccer Falls to Radford, 2-1

8/26/06 --The Long Island University men’s soccer team (0-1) suffered a season-opening 2-1 loss to Radford during the first day of competition at the Radford Tournament. Michael Marten (Ogden, Ill.) netted the only goal for the Blackbirds.

After the two teams battled through a scoreless first half, Marten found the back of the net off a cross from Mohammed Mashriqi (Flushing, N.Y.) in the 54th minute. Long Island would not hold the lead for long, as Radford’s Ramon Negron scored on a pentitley kick just over a minute later.

Then, in the 77th minute, Jeremy Delpino scored the go-ahead goal for the Highlanders. Delpino beat Long Island goalkeeper Jeremy Wimer (Shreveport, La.) after receiving a through ball off the foot of teammate Jimmy Maddox.

Wimer made six saves on the day, while his counterpart, Zach Roszel, stopped five shots. The Blackbirds were outshot 14-9.

LIU returns to action at the Radford Tournament tomorrow when they take on Virginia Military Institute at 1:00 p.m.
