10/29/06 -- Sophomore Michael Marten (Ogden, Ill.) tallied two goals in the game’s first ten minutes as the Long Island University men’s soccer team finished its season with a victory, 2-1, over St. Francis (N.Y.) at LIU Field on Sunday.

Classmate Josh Merchant (New Orleans, La.) assisted on both scores for the Blackbirds. The game was senior day for a pair of LIU players: Andrew Zarick (Louisville, Ky.) and Szymon Hrysczczyk (Warsaw, Poland).

The contest’s first score came just 5:24 after kickoff as Merchant sent a cross from the left side of the field. The ball found Marten in front of the net and his header gave LIU a 1-0 advantage.

Less than two minutes later, the duo connected again. Merchant slid a through ball between two defenders to Marten, who deposited a shot from 16 yards out to beat Terriers goalie Chris Antonino. The goal was Marten’s sixth of the season, a team high.

St. Francis came back to cut the lead in half at the 15:35 mark. John Baptiste Joseph got the ball on the left wing and beat two defenders and struck a low shot that went into the left side of the net. It was Joseph’s fifth goal of the year.
The second half saw the Blackbirds limit the Terriers to just two shots. The back line play of Zarick and junior Ryan Vanderkin (Plymouth, Wisc.) was stellar all day as they held the opponent to just five shots total.

Long Island finishes the season 4-11-2 overall, and conclude Northeast Conference play with a 2-5-2 mark.
